On the 18th of May 2006, KAP organized a health day in Ndhiwa market. The
health day also marked the official opening of the KAP voluntary testing and
counseling center for HIV and the launch of the AMREF Maanisha program. This
program focuses on building capacity in organizations to fight the spreading of
HIV and improve the quality of live for people living with HIV or AIDS.
During the Health day there was free treatment for young children, free
testing and counseling for HIV, free immunization and there were several stage
performances by musicians or drama groups. All these stage performances
addressed problems and implications of HIV and AIDS.
Fortunately KAP is not alone when it come to improving health in Ndhiwa.
During the health day, KAP was assisted by the Ministry of Health, the Sony
Sugar HIV/AIDS care center, Nakato youth drama group and several individuals and
groups from the community.
The possibility for free HIV-testing attracted many people. Over 70 people
indicated that they wanted to be tested. Some people needed to return to the KAP
hospital the next week, because
there was no time left for testing. Several patients were referred to hospital
that are working together with KAP (St. Camillus mission hospital and Homa Bay
District hospital).
