MEDICINE IN NDHIWA by Zoe Thompson ( final
year medic, Newcastle University)
As part of my medical degree I was required to take part in a medical elective. I chose to support KAP and spend some time working in the Acorn Community Hospital. I arrived din Ndhiwa in June not knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by the village, hospital and staff. Although the facilities are very basic in comparison to the UK I was amazed how well medical conditions are dealt with. The nurses, and nurse aids are very knowledgeable and capable of dealing with a wide variety od situations. The pharmacy is well stocked and the laboratory can carry out basic but essential tests. I observed 8 operations carried out by Dr Oteng. The surgical theatre initially shocked me, but it serves a good purpose. Whilst at the hospital I worked alongside the Dr and the nursing staff. I experienced a huge range of medial conditions. I was able to conduct my own consultations, examinations and management plans. I worked with another volunteer to help set up a second outreach clinic to Sibuoche. This will improve community health and extend KAP services. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Ndhiwa. KAP offers excellent and essential services to the community, but there is always more to be done I met some wonderful people who work with and in conditions most of us would rather not imagine. With KAP services community life will slowly improve. |
